2023 SIREN Interim Executive Director

Message from Executive Director

Huy Tran (he/him)

Born to parents who fled the Vietnamese Communist regime as boat people, Huy has devoted his career to social justice and human rights. Huy first began organizing in high school to oppose the death penalty for minors and local curriculum changes. He continued organizing at San Jose State University, leading a coalition of student organizations and the California Faculty Association to fight against budget cuts to the CSU system. While at SJSU, Huy was also part of initiating regional and national networks for Vietnamese youth-based organizations across the country.

After graduating from SJSU, Huy joined the labor movement as an organizer for UNITE HERE, mobilizing immigrant and refugee hotel workers in Mississippi, Washington D.C., and Santa Clara County until he was accepted to Santa Clara University School of Law in 2009. Upon graduation in 2012, Huy went on to co-found Justice at Work Law Group, LLP, a law firm based on social justice and worker's rights. At JAW Law Group, he represented immigrant workers in numerous industries on issues ranging from wage and hour to discrimination and sexual harassment. Huy also supported community-based organizations through the firm with incorporation, board training, compliance, and infrastructure development.

Aside from law, Huy is also active in policy. Huy was a member of the Steering Committee for the Anti-Wage Theft Coalition of Santa Clara County, which enacted anti-wage theft ordinances all across the County. He has served as a member of the Housing and Community Development Commission for the City of San Jose since 2017. He has previously served on the San Jose Charter Review Commission and the Santa Clara County Anti-Hate Crimes Task Force in 2021.

SIREN's Board of Directors has appointed Huy to serve as Executive Director.
